In January, NISD received two awards for the Healthy Start: Food, Fitness, Fun Program implemented at all elementary schools within the District. The Vanguard Award program, sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), School Health Program, recognizes and rewards past Discovery Award winners that have expanded or improved their school health program or initiative currently in place that strives to continually improve the lifelong physical, mental, and social well-being of students, staff, and the greater school community. The Award of Achievement, sponsored by the Texas Pediatric Society Foundation, honors schools or districts for successful results in reducing obesity in adolescents through innovative and effective school programs that promote good nutrition and physical activity. This program leadership includes Linda Seewald, Director of Health and Physical Education, Paul Tucker, Danielle Housley, and Marie Surach.
