Board of Trustees

Elected by the people to govern Northside Schools, Trustees are the guardians of the public trust and, through the policies they make, are ultimately responsible for our schools. This responsibility and the accessibility of Trustees to the voters make the Board one of the purest examples of democracy in our society.

Northside Trustees represent about 208,000 households located in 355 square miles in northwest Bexar County and parts of Medina and Bandera counties. Northside continues to be the “destination” district in San Antonio for many families seeking a quality school system for their children and for employees seeking a quality place to work.

February 12, 2017

Northside ISD celebrated the 100th day of school with many fun and educational lessons throughout the District.  At Franklin ES, students dressed up as if they were a decade old, made crafts with 100 items, and enjoyed many other activities focused on the number 100.

The 44th Annual Walter Gerlach Livestock Show and Sale proved to be a record- breaking year, raising more than $900,000 in scholarships for Northside ISD students. The week-long event turned out nearly 800 entries to include pigs, goats, lambs, rabbits, poultry, steer, and mechanical agriculture products.

The unique contributions of school counselors to schools and students are being recognized this week as part of National School Counseling Week, Feb. 6-10. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

Folks MS students are growing herbs and vegetables with the help of an indoor tower garden purchased through an NEF grant. In their Family and Consumer Science Class students are learning about food sustainability, the science behind food production, and are receiving hands-on experience by growing and sometimes pollinating their own food.

Each February educators across the country celebrate Career and Technical Education (CTE) and the achievements and accomplishments of CTE programs. This year’s theme from the Association for Career and Technical Education for CTE Month is “Celebrate Today, Own Tomorrow” giving school districts the opportunity to demonstrate how students are not only college-ready but also career-ready.

Last night, Trustees discussed and took action on several items: appointed two new principals, approved a resolution calling for the repeal of the A-F rating system, and approved an audit of the District’s financial report.

The Eco Friends Club at Kuentz ES is setting the example to clean up the environment with a huge recycling program. Since the organization formed back in 2011, the students at Kuentz have collected more than 2 million recycling items to include plastic and aluminum.

For 44 years, the Walter Gerlach Livestock Show and Sale has been a Northside ISD tradition that has quietly raised nearly $15 million in college scholarships for students. This year’s event has 795 entries which will again draw hundreds of students and livestock bidders.

A new campus organization for male students at Villarreal Elementary School is teaching the students to be respectful, set goals, and how to dress for the occasion.

Middle school students at Ross MS (and all NISD middle schools) have a chance to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) using LEGOs and robots in a fun, after school environment.
